Percy Jackson Season 2’s Release Plan Confirms Our Worst Fears About The Disney+ Show

Disney+ has revealed their release plan for season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, confirming one of our greatest concerns for the series. Based on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books, the Disney series has set out to finally bring a faithful adaptation to life. Notably, the first two books were adapted into a film series, though fans of Riordan’s world critiqued a major change: the main characters had been aged up to be in their later teen years, with the studio’s hope being to allow for a broader, adult appeal.

The reviews for season 1 were fairly mixed, but there are notable highlights, including the Percy Jackson TV show cast. Walker Scobell was 13 when he was announced to play the titular character, and his performance was praised for its awe-inspiring fulfillment of the beloved YA books. However, Walker Scobell is 16 now, just one year younger than Logan Lerman when he filmed the first movie.

Percy Jackson Season 2’s Release Plan Confirms A 2-Year Gap Between Seasons

Season 2 Will Hit Streaming In December 2025

The first season of the Percy Jackson TV series premiered in December 2023, and now, Disney has confirmed December 2025 for its season 2 release date. This means, like many other streaming series in recent years, particularly those with higher budgets, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is going to have a two-year gap between seasons. House of the Dragon was recently critiqued for its long wait before season 2, and Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power reportedly saw a 60% viewership in its sophomore season (via Forbes).

The streaming advent has drastically changed the television game, and while, in some cases, it’s resulted in increased quality and permission for more CGI, it’s still frustrating for those who are used to keeping up with their shows annually. Even Game of Thrones, the biggest TV show of all time, managed to provide annual releases for its first seven seasons. A two-year gap between every season of Percy Jackson is going to be a pain for fans, but there are even more significant concerns with this show in particular.

If Percy Jackson’s Future Seasons Follow This Trend, The Disney+ Show Will Run Into A Problem

Walker Scobell is 16 now, meaning that if Disney continues at this rate, he’ll be 22 by the time season 5 covers The Last Olympian. That’s not entirely unreasonable, as many older actors have played teenagers before. He’s a youthful-looking sixteen-year-old, and he’ll undoubtedly maintain his charm, but time is still of the essence to him and other cast members. For example, Malcolm David Kelley, who played Walt in season 1 of Lost, had to be written off the show due to a surprise growth spurt.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2 Is “Even Better” Than The First, Gushes Author Rick Riordan

Author Rick Riordan has nothing but praise for Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, claiming that it may be “even better” than the original.

We don’t want to see Disney+ run into a similar problem with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as the cast has been one of the strongest aspects of the series so far. Hopefully, the recent news about season 3 already being renewed prior to season 2’s release could mean that they’re getting a head-start on the show, with season 2’s delay only being due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023.
