What Happened To Punisher’s Son Before Frank Castle’s MCU Return
Frank Castle a.k.a. the Punisher had a tragic origin story in the MCU before meeting Matt Murdock in Netflix’s Daredevil and returning in Daredevil: Born Again. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle made his debut in Daredevil season 2, where the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen confronted him over his ultra-violent methods of crime-fighting. Having created an infamous legacy as the Punisher, Frank Castle went to jail, reluctantly collaborated with Wilson Fisk, and joined forces with Daredevil before continuing his self-imposed crusade to eliminate crime on his own terms.
The Punisher was last seen denying an officer to work as an assassin for the CIA in order to carry on wiping out entire criminal gangs on his own. Frank Castle’s MCU story is unknown afterwards. Daredevil: Born Again, which takes place seven to eight years after the events of Daredevil season 3, will bring back the Punisher and reveal what he has been doing since then. In 2015, Frank Castle returned from a tour in Iraq after a grueling career as a Marine. Castle reunited with his wife Maria and his children, Lisa and Frank Jr, and took them on a stroll to Central Park. To Frank Castle’s shock, an apparent drug deal gone wrong triggered a shootout, where Maria, Lisa, and Frank Jr. all died. Frank Castle was shot in the head, but suffered no major injuries. Taking inspiration from the X-rays of his skull and the media’s reports of his attacks on the gangs involved in the shooting, Frank Castle adopts the skull emblem and names himself “The Punisher”.

Frank Castle’s Family Was Murdered By His Own Higher-Ups
Before his family died, Frank Castle had been part of “Project Cerberus”, a black ops unit that forced him to perform illegal assassinations. One of the individuals Castle had to execute while on duty made Castle a liability for Project Cerberus and the people benefiting from the unit’s illegal activities. While the Irish Mob, the Cartel, and the Dogs of Hell motorcycle gang were the direct perpetrators of Frank Castle’s family’s murder, the Punisher later discovered that his former commanders were the masterminds behind the crime. The Punisher first wiped out all gangs involved, and then he moved on to the true culprits.

Frank Castle doubled down on his Punisher persona to hunt down Colonel Ray Schoonover a.k.a. the Blacksmith and CIA agent William Rawlins, forcing them to pay for their roles in his family’s murders. Castle also discovered that his longtime friend and fellow Marine William “Billy” Russo had betrayed him, as Russo knew Frank Castle and his family had been targeted. Besides, Russo also played a role within the conspiracy, as getting rid of Frank Castle would have protected his money-laundering operations. A badly injured Russo returned with a vengeance after the Punisher left him with life-altering injuries, calling himself “Jigsaw”.

Frank Castle exacted revenge on Schoonover and Rawlins. Eventually, Frank Castle also killed Billy Russo. After killing everyone connected to his family’s murder, Frank Castle found himself without a purpose in life. However, he couldn’t avoid his Punisher lifestyle. Frank Castle received a final opportunity to avoid further legal problems and put his skills to good use by working privately with the CIA, but he refused. Instead, Frank Castle took up his Punisher persona officially again and started taking an even bolder approach to crime-fighting, luring two gangs into a trap that would allow him to kill all of them at the same time.
