I Can’t Believe Dark Winds Season 3 Tried To Convince Us That Was The Same Pig Drawing

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dark Winds season 3, episode 2.Dark Winds season 3 changed the “pig” drawing that Bernadette Manuelito’s (Jessica Matten) investigation is built on, and it somehow thought we wouldn’t notice. In the premiere of Dark Winds season 3, Bernadette was given a pig drawing made by the Mixtec girl she arrested. At first, that pig drawing looked like an unintelligible bunch of scribbles, but Bernadette managed to use it to track down Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood) and his ranch. Because it provided a connection between Bernadette’s supsicions of human trafficking and Spenser, the pig drawing has proven to be quite important to Dark Winds season 3.
While it is just circumstantial evidence, the pig drawing is the only link between the Mixtec mother and daughter in Dark Winds and Tom Spenser. Bernadette is also very clearly on the right track in her investigation, as Spenser employs Budge de Baca (Raoul Max Trujillo), the same man who killed Wade at the start of Dark Winds season 3, episode 2. As important as the pig drawing is, however, Dark Winds tried to pull a fast one on its viewers, and the acclaimed mystery show seemingly thought that we wouldn’t notice the new pig drawing.
Bernadette Used A Completely Different Pig Drawing To Find Spenser In Dark Winds Season 3
Dark Winds Season 3, Episode 2 Made The Pig Drawing Noticeably Easier To Decipher
When Bernadette first found Spenser’s ranch in Dark Winds season 3, episode 2, she pulled out the pig drawing she had gotten from the first episode. Taken together, it became clear that the little girl had drawn a picture of the logo of Spenser’s ranch, the letters “R” and “S” in a circle. The only problem was that Bernadette produced an entirely different drawing from the one shown in the premiere of Dark Winds season 3. The first one appeared to be a few scribbles in a circle, but the newer one features very legible letters in a neatly-drawn circle.

Dark Winds season 3 is the darkest season yet, with a killer leaving a disturbing and sacrilegious calling card that has Joe Leaphorn perplexed.
It may seem like a nitpick to criticize Dark Winds for changing the pig drawing, and it is, but it’s also very strange. Dark Winds is a mystery show, a genre that offers much of its entertainment value in letting the audience try to guess the answer ahead of time. Changing the pig drawing makes it feel like Dark Winds was purposefully obfuscating the truth in its premiere, and it makes Bernadette’s discovery of Spenser’s ranch feel cheaper. Additionally, mystery shows like Dark Winds are always very detail-oriented, so it’s just strange that it would change the drawing and hope no one would notice.
I Don’t Know Why Dark Winds Changed Such A Big Part Of Its Mystery Between Episodes
Dark Winds Must Have Realized Some Viewers Would Notice The Different Pig Drawing
The difference between the pig drawings is very obvious once they’re put side to side, so I find it really odd that Dark Winds would make such a major change in back-to-back episodes. If the series had revisited the pig halfway through the season, I could understand making the drawing more legible for clarity purposes, but I don’t get changing it after showing the drawing two separate times just a week prior. While the new drawing does make it clearer that Bernadette is right to be suspicious of Spenser, it still feels like Dark Winds should have trusted its viewers to make that connection with the old drawing.

It is possible that Bernadette figured out what the original drawing was trying to represent and drew a new version herself, but if that was the case, Dark Winds probably should have shown that moment. If she did figure out the drawing and Dark Winds simply didn’t show it, then the series skipped over a major piece of Bernadette’s investigative work and asked the audience to just believe that she interpreted the drawing correctly. Bernadette’s entire case is built on this “pig,” so I feel like Dark Winds should have explained it better than simply giving her a new drawing to work with.
