After the events of Severance season 2, episode 9, I’m worried that Dylan’s innie will die in the upcoming season finale. Severance season 2 has changed things a lot from the first season of the hit Apple TV+ series. Specifically, compared to season 1, the four Microdata Refiners have spent a lot less time together this season. Irving was fired in season 2, episode 4, and it also seems like Mark’s innie hasn’t been around the office that much since he is secretly reintegrating. Even Helly wasn’t who she claimed to be for the first half of season 2.
However, Dylan has been coming to work consistently for the entirety of the season. Out of all Severance season 2’s characters, Dylan has been perhaps the most motivated at work since he’s able to visit his outie’s wife. Throughout the season, Dylan’s innie falls in love with Gretchen. Since he has only ever known life as an employee on Lumon’s severed floor, Gretchen is the first love of Dylan’s innie’s life. Therefore, when she tells him she can’t visit him anymore, Dylan puts in a resignation request in Severance season 2, episode 9.

Season 2, Episode 9 Could Be The Last Time We See Dylan’s Innie
If Dylan’s outie approves this resignation request, then his innie will cease to exist. After being fired from Lumon after the events of Severance season 1, Dylan’s outie is shown struggling to find work in the outside world. Therefore, there’s a chance that his outie won’t want to stop working on Lumon’s severed floor. However, in season 2, episode 9, Gretchen admits to Dylan’s outie that she kissed his innie. Since this is technically cheating, Dylan’s outie is understandably upset about this.

After learning about his wife’s strange relationship with his innie, there’s a chance that Dylan’s outie actually will approve the resignation request. However, a season 2 finale twist could also drastically change Dylan’s story. Since Dylan is never actually shown leaving the building in season 2, episode 9, fans have theorized that he is going to be kidnapped by Lumon. Perhaps Lumon will orchestrate a fake death for his outie, just like they did with Gemma.
Would Severance Really Kill Off 2 Original MDR Innies In Season 2?
Irving’s Innie Already Died In Severance Season 2
There’s definitely still a chance that Dylan survives in Severance, especially since killing his innie off would perhaps make season 2 far too heartbreaking. After all, Irving’s innie was killed off just a few episodes ago. Therefore, part of me wants to believe killing off two original MDR innies in one season is too much, even for Severance’s writers. However, Severance is oftentimes a very depressing and hopeless series, so I’m not going to keep my fingers crossed about Dylan surviving.
It’s possible that none of the main innie characters stick around for Severance season 3.
Killing two original Microdata Refiners in one season may seem bold, but at the same time, all the original refiners may cease to be characters soon. In addition to Irving’s innie already being killed off, Mark may be fully reintegrated soon. This means that he will no longer be the same character that fans have loved watching on the severed floor. Additionally, Helena Eagan only agreed to become Helly again so that Mark’s innie would finish Cold Harbor. Therefore, it’s possible that none of the main innie characters stick around for Severance season 3.
Dylan’s Innie Dying Would Make His Role In Severance Season 3 More Complicated
Dylan’s Outie Hasn’t Had A Major Role In Severance
Depending on what happens with Dylan’s innie in the Severance season 2 finale, actor Zach Cherry could technically still appear in season 3. Disregarding the aforementioned theory that Lumon may fake Dylan’s outie’s death, his outie could still have a role in season 3 even if his innie dies. However, what Dylan’s outie’s role would be in Severance season 3 is hard to predict, since he is currently so far removed from all the drama involving Lumon and the other character’s outies.

Mark’s outie’s wife is being held captive by Lumon, Helly’s outie is actually an Eagan, and Irving’s outie was investigating Lumon and also has a relationship with Burt. Meanwhile, Dylan’s outie doesn’t have any significant connections to Lumon, and his story mostly revolves around his wife and children. Therefore, if his innie dies, it is currently unclear what Dylan’s outie’s role would be in season 3. Even though he’s in a precarious situation, hopefully Dylan’s innie survives the Severance season 2 finale and can appear again in the third season.
