Jesse L. Martin & Karen David Reflect On The Irrational Season 2’s Musical-Themed Episode
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Irrational season 2, episode 17.The Irrational season 2, episode 17, aired Tuesday, March 18 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. “Suddenly Alec” is the final installment before the season finale, and sees the behavioral science professor take on an unexpected role in a local musical. The official synopsis reads: “In order to solve an actor’s murder, Alec and Rose must go undercover to infiltrate a community theater production of Little Shop of Horrors but joining the cast may put them right in the killer’s crosshairs.”
Alec hopes he and Rose will be able to catch the killer before the show goes on, but becomes increasingly involved in Little Shop of Horrors as rehearsals amp up. Fans see the protagonist show off his acting skills, with Rose jumping in to help her partner loosen up and run lines. Both characters end up performing in the production and are cheered on by Phoebe, Rizwan, and Kylie. However, it wouldn’t be The Irrational without a cliffhanger to set up the season 2 finale. “Suddenly Alec” ends with Rose receiving a case involving her husband.

While visiting the set in Vancouver, ScreenRant spoke with Jesse L. Martin and Karen David about filming The Irrational’s highly-anticipated musical episode, as well as the romance between their characters.
Rose Is Excited About Alec’s Role In Little Shop Of Horrors
“By some crazy circumstances, egged on by Rose, I end up in the show.”
Jesse L. Martin: Rose gets called into a case where she has to follow a young man whose husband believes that he may be being unfaithful. And so we follow him, and he ends up here in this little community theater in the DC, Maryland, Virginia tri-state area. We find out that he isn’t actually cheating.
He’s doing a lot more stuff. But he’s also in a production of Little Shop of Horrors, and I very accidentally end up snooping around this place that we don’t know is a theater because it looks like a barn. I end up auditioning for the play and getting the role of the plant. By some crazy circumstances, egged on by Rose, I end up in the show.
Karen David: Rose is just a little too excited.
Jesse L. Martin: We did the damn thing. We did the show.
Karen David: It was so much fun.
Martin Was Thrilled To Combine His Love For Theater With His Love For Procedurals
“We get to pull in my favorite space of theater people, who are my favorite people to play with.”
Jesse L. Martin: Oftentimes, one of the best things about being in a good show, and particularly in procedurals like this is what kind of actors you’re able to draw in to play characters. Law & Order was famous for bringing in talents who are brand new, and we all know as big names now.
We get to pull in my favorite space of theater people, who are my favorite people to play with, this being one of them. And in this episode, it also crystallized into a space where they’re like, “Look at us. We’re on TV doing the damn thing that I love doing onstage.”
Karen David: It was so magical. And when you have the crew coming up to you so excited and giving you a big hug or a high five just to see how proud they are of each other and all of us, it’s so wonderful.
Jesse L. Martin: It’s a shame that we couldn’t do the whole damn play because it was so much fun.
Being In The Play Takes Alec Out Of His Comfort Zone In The Irrational Season 2, Episode 17
“Alec is doing undercover spy work, and he’s actually really good at it. But Rose has to remember that that’s not who he is.”
Jesse L. Martin: Alec didn’t feel comfortable being in the play. He sang in his earlier life in college, but he wasn’t that guy. He wasn’t a “let’s get on stage and do this thing.”
Karen David: Whereas Rose was just a little too excited. Again, MI6, when we were talking about Rose’s backstory right from when I started last season—she would’ve gone to drama college. And in her mind, this is, again, another opportunity where she doesn’t have to be herself.
She could be someone else, and that’s her comfort zone and her sense of escapism. So for her, this was just very, very exciting. But also, I think this particular episode is an eye-opener too, because this is the first time that Alec is doing undercover spy work, and he’s actually really good at it. But Rose has to remember that that’s not who he is. He is not a liar at all.
Jesse L. Martin: Alec is very good at reminding you too. It’s not what I do. But again, love makes you blind, and you just do what she says.
