NBC’s New Series Grosse Pointe Garden Society Gets Rare Rescheduling Update After Just Four Episodes

The new NBC crime drama Grosse Pointe Garden Society gets a rare scheduling change that could be concerning. Debuting in February from creators Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, the story centers on four members of a suburban garden club who have conspired to cover up a murder. With each of their lives personal lives in turmoil, it doesn’t take long for damaging secrets to bubble up to the surface. The cast includes Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder), Ben Rappaport (Mr. Robot), and AnnaSophia Robb (The Carrie Diaries).

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Grosse Pointe Garden Society will move from Sundays to Fridays, beginning on April 4. It will take over Friday’s 8 PM slot, currently occupied by the Reba McEntire sitcom Happy’s Place, with the sitcom’s first season airing its finale on March 21. As for Grosse Pointe‘s Sunday timeslot, it will be taken over by episodes of Dateline. The change, a rarity at this point in the broadcast TV season, is said to be done with the goal of adding more viewers to the newbie drama. But, historically, a move to Fridays has been tough to overcome for many shows.

Friday nights have generally been regarded as a tough night to program on American television since most viewers are taking in the start of the weekend in other ways than watching TV. This truism has generally led to what is known as the Friday night death slot, which is where shows go before getting cancelled. Still, there are recent examples that buck the trend. Happy’s Place was renewed for season 2. Blue Bloods, on CBS, ran for 14 seasons and only ended in 2024 despite its Friday night presence.

In the case of Grosse Pointe Garden Society specifically, and according to NBC, the premiere episode has reached a 1.21 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 6.6 million total viewers across all platforms since it first aired on February 23. Variety notes that a more recent episode, which aired on March 9, only grew from 1 million viewers to 1.8 million after seven days. But those numbers do not include Peacock viewership, where the show is available to stream.

Let’s Hope The Finale Is Satisfying

This move might be a reaction from executives to the numbers of the crime drama. That’s complicated by the fact that the full streaming viewership numbers are known. But if history is any guide, and if the difficulty of dramas on Fridays holds true, then let’s hope that Grosse Pointe Garden Society reveals its mystery in a way that brings closure to the story.
