Sorry, Komi Can’t Communicate Fans, But The Creator Just Dropped Some Bad News About The Series’ Future

This past January, Komi Can’t Communicate finally ended after almost a decade of serialization. Between the manga and the short-lived, but fantastic anime, Komi Can’t Communicate has been one of the best anime and manga rom-coms to read and watch in recent years, and its conclusion is nothing but bittersweet.
Komi Can’t Communicate’s ending is the end of another fantastic manga, and unfortunately, there might be even less left to its story than people thought. While Komi’s ending was largely conclusive, there were still a few loose ends that needed to be resolved, so it wouldn’t have been out of the question for the manga to receive a sequel of some sort later down the line. Unfortunately, Komi Can’t Communicate creator Tomohito Oda has just made any hopes for a sequel happening anytime soon all but impossible, although as disappointing as that may be, it’s ultimately for the best.
Komi Can’t Communicate’s Creator Just Shot Down Any Hopes Of A Sequel
Komi Can’t Communicate Might Be Done As A Franchise
Following the release of the final volume of Komi Can’t Communicate in Japan, series creator Tomohito Oda commented on his future as a creator, and it’s not the news most people were probably looking for. While Oda isn’t planning on retiring and does want to make a new series one day, he currently has no concrete plans to draw again anytime soon and currently wants to focus on raising his child. As such, Komi Can’t Communicate fans shouldn’t expect anything new from the author according to his most recent statement, whether it’s a sequel series or a new story, entirely.
In either case, the news is rather disappointing to hear. Not only would it have been great to have an idea of when Tomohito Oda would be back with a new manga, but with how many loose ends Komi Can’t Communicate ended with such as Komi and Tadano’s college life and Maruko Tadano’s identity, it would have been great to get at least a standalone story wrapping it all up. Tomohito Oda’s hiatus is disappointing for anyone hoping to see more from him, Komi Can’t Communicate or otherwise, and unfortunately, there’s no real way to resolve that.
Why Komi Can’t Communicate’s Author Taking A Break Is A Good Thing
Why Tomohito Oda Deserves A Break
As disappointing as Tomohito Oda’s hiatus might be, it’s ultimately for the best. Not only is Oda taking a break to be with his family nothing but commendable, but with how stressful weekly serializations are known to be, it will only benefit Oda’s health to not jump back into another manga after nine straight years of writing Komi Can’t Communicate. Everything about Tomohito Oda’s decision to go on hiatus is entirely practical and to the benefit of his health and family, and that’s nothing but respectable.
If anything, a hiatus could actually be good for Tomohito Oda’s career. Rather than try and force himself to keep working when he’s probably tired from Komi Can’t Communicate, a hiatus gives Oda a chance to recharge physically and mentally, and as such, Tomohito Oda’s hiatus can help him enter a state of being that will allow his next project to be just as good as Komi Can’t Communicate, if not better. Any Komi Can’t Communicate fan should be nothing but happy about Tomohito Oda’s hiatus, and whenever he returns with something new, it will be well worth the wait.
