The Rookie star Lisseth Chavez, who plays Officer Selena Juarez in the ABC hit drama series, has teased that season 7 will contain an episode that is on the darker side. Chavez joined the show in a recurring role in The Rookie season 5, before being promoted to a main role the following year. Her character trained under John Nolan, demonstrated good instincts but unorthodox methods and encountered many disturbing experiences over the show. But things look set to get even darker and more complex in season 7.
In an interview with Screen Rant’s Rachel Foertsch, Chavez discusses which episodes of the current season she is most looking forward to, before revealing that the season will contain a dark episode. She confesses that she was not sure what she was allowed to say, and that she couldn’t remember the episode number, but that she was excited for it, and teasesthat it is going to be an episode that verges on the darker side. Screen Rant: Since you’ve already finished filming the season, is there an upcoming episode that you’re particularly excited for fans to see?
Lisseth Chavez: There is, but it’s a little bit on the darker side. I am excited. I’m excited to see how everything got put together. I don’t know what I can say. I don’t even remember the episode number. But I am excited for a specific episode. It is a little bit more on the darker side.
The Show Could Start To Explore Darker Storylines Long-Term
The Rookie has never shied away from dark and complex issues, which makes sense considering it is a show following police officers in Los Angeles. Indeed, gang warfare, kidnapping, serial killers, and domestic abuse are all issues that have been explored through storylines in the show, but Chavez’s comments hint at something else. The season is already treading morally ambiguous ground, with the return of Jason, as well as the machinations of other prominent The Rookie season 7 characters, such as serial killer Seth Gabel, and things could go a step further.

While it is unclear what Chavez is referring to, touching on darker storylines and plot points is an exciting prospect, and could signal a pivot for the direction of the show. And, while there has been no word on whether The Rookie season 8 will receive a renewal yet, if it does, this could be a theme that continues throughout the rest of the show’s run. Based on Chavez’s comments, there is also a good chance that the darker storyline, whatever it may be, will involve her character Selena in some capacity, and could involve her new romance with Rodge.

The Rookie Has Always Worked Best As A Blend
While it is exciting that the show is seeking to explore darker stories, and push itself creatively, The Rookie is a show that works best when it has a strong blend of drama and intensity juxtaposed with a little more levity. The latter of these is something that could get lost among darker storylines, and this could be a disservice to the show, as well as negatively impacting it. It will be interesting to see how the experiment works in season 7, and whether this move into darker territory is something The Rookie will seek to continue long-term.
