Throughout the critically acclaimed new series, which was continuously filmed without editing in four episodic installments, Eddie and his family must cope with a waking nightmare after their teenage son, Jamie, is charged with stabbing a classmate, Katie, to death. Towards the end of Adolescence, which takes place 13 months after Jamie’s arrest, Eddie still tries to make sense of his son’s horrific actions.
Adolescence episode 4 also takes place on Eddie’s 50th birthday, which is given an added layer of tragedy due to Jamie’s shocking admission that he plans to plead guilty at his upcoming trial. Eddie takes this as a confession even after seeing the undeniable proof through CCTV footage of Jamie killing Katie. More than anything, the “Nonce” tag on his van is a harrowing reminder of everything that’s happened, even though it doesn’t appear to be a direct accusation against Eddie or anyone in particular.
