Severance has been renewed for season 3 at Apple TV+. The sci-fi workplace drama began in 2022, with Severance season 1 ending with one of the most shocking cliffhangers of all time. The show tells the story of a series of people working for the company Lumon, who voluntarily go through a procedure that will separate the consciousnesses of their work and personal lives. The Emmy-nominated series features a leading cast including Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken. The Severance season 2 finale dropped today, March 21, on the platform.
As per Variety, Severance season 3 has officially been confirmed. The renewal comes just after the season 2 finale premiered on the platform. Speaking on the renewal, Stiller and other team members voiced excitement. Stiller referred to Severance as “one of the most creatively exciting experiences [he’s] ever been a part of.” Scott continued on with praise, while making a joke about not telling his innie the news. Creator Dan Erickson was also thrilled, as was Apple TV+ programming head Matt Cherniss. Check out their quotes below:
Ben Stiller: Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of. While I have no memory of this, I’m told making Season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.
Adam Scott: I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple and the whole ‘Severance’ team. Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.
Dan Erickson: The idea of getting to make more ‘Severance’ with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.
Matt Cheriss: What Ben, Dan, Adam and the talented cast and crew behind ‘Severance’ have brought to the screen is undeniable magic. We’re so proud to be the home for this brilliant series and look forward to audiences experiencing what’s in store for Season 3.
What This Means For Severance
Severance Season 3 Was Highly Expected Before This
In many ways, the Severance renewal should come as no surprise. Apple TV+ has previously noted that Severance became their most-watched series of all time during its second season, surpassing even the acclaimed comedy Ted Lasso. The series creators have also talked multiple times about their hopes for season 3 and beyond, with Erickson previously stating that “there is an endpoint for the series as a whole, and we know more or less how many seasons we are going to do.” Even absent the official confirmation, all of this suggested that more Severance was coming after season 2.
Severance season 3 is also much-needed after the pacing of the second season. While a lot of character development happened in season 2, the series also took its sweet time building suspense and creating additional mystery. The finale wraps some things up, but there is still plenty more to be exposed about the testing floor, the goats, and Lumon’s origin. The second season of this mystery box TV show proved that it was not ready to be done yet, so a third season will be an apt way to give it more time to explore its ideas.
Our Take On The Severance Season 3 Renewal
I Hope The Season Gap Is Shorter
Severance is one of the most intriguing shows on television right now, so I am just excited as anyone that the project is being renewed. My biggest hope, however, is that the season gap can be shorter this time around. Barring any further major Hollywood strikes, there are less likely to be major external barriers in the way of season 3’s development. With Severance being Apple TV+’s most successful show yet, I am also hopeful that the streamer will sink copious resources into the swift production of season 3.
More to come…
