Naruto Has a New Mangekyo Sharingan, But Honestly

The Sharingan has been one of the most interesting and powerful techniques the Naruto franchise has ever produced. It has also been one of the series’ signature Jutsu for decades, being just as recognizable and beloved as the protagonist’s Rasengan. Whenever a new Sharingan or a new skill related to this powerful family technique is revealed, fans tend to become excited, as they are always ready to see in what new ways this ability will be used.
Nonetheless, the release of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #20 has caused this excellent ninja eye technique to find itself surrounded by controversy. Sarada has used her Mangekyo Sharingan for the second time in history, to the dismay of many fans. While some believe that granting her this powerup without training is unfair, others believe this will help her character evolve.
Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan Has Finally Revealed Its Powers
Her Abilities Seem Similar to Obito’s Kamui
In chapter #20 of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga series, Sarada and her friends are cornered by Ryu, who is using his control over Iron Sand to keep them trapped. Without Araya’s new controversial magnetic sword to keep the material under control, there was nothing the heroes could do to stop the Divine Tree. Yodo, trying to save her friends and comrades, asks Ryu to let the rest go, as she will go with him willingly and use her detection skills to find Boruto. Instead of accepting the deal, the monster used his powers to stab the girl.
Shinki’s friend, instead of lamenting her failure, decided to speak with Sarada, letting her know that it was right to use her abilities to protect the special people in her life. After a brief memory of Boruto comes to her mind, the sand around the heroes begins to be absorbed by a small black hole. Mitsuki, who is known for being observant, notices that Sarada is the one who saved them, shockingly announcing that she is using the Mangekyo Sharingan. This is not the first time this skill has been used by Sasuke’s daughter.

Admit It, Boruto: The Hidden Leaf Village Really Does Need Naruto and Sasuke
The latest chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex proves that Naruto’s next generation of shinobi are not yet ready for prime time challenges.
She awakened her abilities back in chapter #80 of the original manga after the entire world turned against Boruto. The girl, motivated by the love and affection she feels for her friend, awakened the overwhelming power of her Sharingan, this being the only reason Sasuke agreed to help Naruto’s son. No details about her abilities were known at the time, but the latest chapter proves that her skills are like the Kamui. By concentrating on a point in space, she can open a portal that transports anything it absorbs into a pocket dimension.
Is Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan a Bad Addition?
Although Slightly Unearned, This Ability Was Necessary for Her Character
One of the main reasons why the introduction of Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan has caused controversy among the fans is that the Boruto series is once again bringing back one of the original manga’s biggest issues. The story of Naruto’s son has been heavily criticized in the past for its tendency to give its characters power-ups without them being truly earned. For example, the Karma marks implanted in Boruto and Kawaki gave them access to all the abilities of a member of the powerful Otsutsuki clan. Thanks to these skills, they immediately became some of the most powerful ninjas.
Fans, understandably, are not happy with the introduction of yet another boost in power without justification. Nonetheless, unlike in the past, the series does have good reason to reward Sarada with this power. The series does not suddenly reveal that Sarada can access the Mangekyo Sharingan out of the blue, as she had already used the ability in the past. Although it is slightly unrealistic that she has absolute control over the technique even after never using it once, this can be attributed to the adrenaline of the situation. Moreover, Yodo herself explained why Sarada was able to use this skill.

Naruto Heats up With a Big Love Triangle That Puts Boruto on the Spot
Sumire Kakei and Sarada Uchiha’s feelings for Boruto Uzumaki come to a head in the latest chapter of Two Blue Vortex.
Sasuke’s daughter wanted to keep her eyes a secret from the world, as the technique had quite a dreadful reputation behind it. She tried to use them only when there were no other options left, likely afraid of the stigma that would come with their revelation. Yet, Yodo’s words and Sarada’s desire to help Boruto are what pushed her to let go of her mental limitations. She might not have trained to earn power, but she did go through a silent struggle for years that justifies her new abilities.
Sarada’s Eyes Break the Uchiha’s Curse
Her Main Motivation Is Love, Not Hatred
For centuries, the Mangekyo Sharingan had been considered a curse by the Uchiha family, as the only way to awaken the ability was by experiencing loss. All the strongest members of the clan, from Sasuke to Madara, had to see one of their loved ones die in front of their eyes before gaining access to their evolved abilities. As such, a member of the Uchiha clan who could use this skill was considered a danger to the world, as they were most likely looking for revenge against their enemies.
Sarada is a special case, as her powers were not born from the hatred in her heart but rather the love she feels for Boruto. Whether her feelings for the boy are platonic or not, chapter #20 proves she sees him as one of the most important people in her life. Her Mangekyo Sharingan is not a sign of anger, but rather her desire to protect those whom she loves. The introduction of her ability is a massive step forward for her character, as it makes her a lot more interesting and hints at her becoming important to the story.
Sarada Is Vital for Boruto’s Survival
The Manga Suggests She Will Become a Vital Part of the Protagonist’s Mission
Even though the story of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #20 barely touched upon Sarada’s abilities, it did imply that her role will become much more important in the future. The entry makes it clear that Sasuke’s daughter desperately wants to help the protagonist survive, as her main mission is to bring him back home. Her new abilities will help her stop being seen as a liability for the boy and become a valuable team member. There is a high possibility that Sarada could be the one who helps Boruto save the day and defeat Ryu and Matsuri.
It seems like the Naruto franchise is about to enter a new era for the Uchiha clan, one led by love and hope rather than darkness. Thanks to her Mangekyo Sharingan, Sarada has the potential to become one of the most important characters in the manga. While she is still far from being among the strongest warriors, she will be no less significant for the future of the Shinobi World.
