The events backtrack three days earlier from the ceremonial feast to honor Ben, showing that the strangers, Hannah and Edwin, are on an expedition to study Artic Banshee frogs as part of a special event, alongside their guide, Kodiak. Yellowjackets reveals that the screeching scream heard throughout season 3 is coming from the frogs who have recently woken up for a mating event.
The frogs’ screeching is their mating call, something that’s never been recorded in history, and it’s loud enough to carry throughout the surrounding area for the others to hear.
So, after all the speculation surrounding what was making the disturbing noises, it was coming from the wilderness, just not in the way we expected. Rather than some peculiar supernatural explanation or assumption that the wilderness has come alive, it turns out that the frogs Hannah and Edwin are studying had been frozen for seven years before waking up for the mating event. If it wasn’t for the frogs and their significant mating event, Hannah and Edwin wouldn’t have been in the area with Kodiak in the first place.

Studying the species nearby leads the travelers to cross paths with the survivor camp, which turns into a battle after Lottie kills Edwin with an ax. While Melissa gets severely injured and Hannah ends up becoming the new prisoner, it’s unclear what the group will do with Kodiak. Still, it doesn’t sound like the outsiders will get the group closer to being rescued. So even if the frogs don’t directly harm the group, their existence ends up affecting the survival journey, with the group making the situation worse. In a way, maybe the screaming wilderness in Yellowjackets was a warning.
