Before Invincible Season 4, This Is The Special I Need Prime Video To Make

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3’s finale, “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up”.After Invincible season 3’s finale, the future of Prime Video’s hit superhero show has never looked more exciting, but I’m still hoping to see one special before the series returns. With another eight episodes officially in the books, the dreaded wait for season 4 begins, but there are some encouraging signs that the hiatus won’t be too long. Following a two-and-a-half-year break between seasons 1 and 2, Invincible fixed its production issues with season 3, and Robert Kirkman seemed optimistic that yearly releases could be part of the show’s future, meaning it may be back on TV in 2026.
In addition to Kirkman’s comments, J.K. Simmons – the voice of Omni-Man – also claimed to have dipped his toes into the next season, suggesting voice work may have already started. All the signs point towards Invincible season 4 continuing the show’s positive release trend and leaving its previous mistakes in the past; however, before the next installment arrives, I’m still hopeful that we get another special. Following the success of Atom Eve’s one-off episode, a new special project feels inevitable, and the most emotional scene from Invincible season 3’s finale just confirmed who the perfect next candidate is.
Invincible Season 3’s Emotional Funeral Makes A Rex Splode Special Episode All The More Appealing
Rex’s Legacy Deserves To Be Honored Through A Dedicated Episode
Rex Splode’s emotional death during the Invincible War was a huge gut punch, but after his powerful funeral scene, I’m more desperate than ever to see him get a special episode. The idea of another special was already appealing, but with Rex’s journey officially coming to a close, there has never been a more fitting character to explore further. Like Atom Eve, Rex’s special episode could focus on his past, potentially exploring his origins, his relationship with Eve, and even his recruitment to Teen Team, all of which would give a stronger insight into who Rex truly was.
Before finding redemption, Invincible largely painted Rex as selfish and arrogant, but tapping into his origins could help explain why he acted that way in the first place. Although there are plenty of other heroes a special could focus on, the impact Rex’s death had on his teammates proves that he deserves one more chance in the spotlight. The finale’s funeral scene was a great way to pay tribute to the character, but giving him his own special would truly honor his legacy, and I hope we get to enjoy his infectious personality one last time.
Rex’s Backstory Is Far Too Interesting To Not Explore Further
Invincible Only Scratched The Tip Of The Iceberg Regarding Rex’s Origins
Although Rex has arguably had more character development than any other hero so far, his backstory is far too interesting not to explore further, which is why I’m desperate to see him get his own special. Throughout the series, Invincible referenced his backstory numerous times, but it never went all the way in terms of exploring it in depth. Rex’s romance with Shrinking Rae in Invincible season 3 made it clear his childhood was far from normal, but it would be great to get a deep dive into what he actually went through, considering how tragic his origin story is.

An Invincible Character You Totally Forgot About Just Died Offscreen
Invincible has introduced plenty of memorable heroes and villains over the years, but season 3 revealed a forgotten character quietly died offscreen.
In the comics, the hero was sold by his parents to a government official named Radcliffe, who essentially turned him into a weapon. He underwent surgery, hence his skeleton being able to ignite and explode, with the operation giving him his superpowers. Despite his government ties, Radcliffe ordered Rex to blow up the Pentagon, which is where Rex first met Atom Eve. After refusing to go through with the mission, Rex was slapped by Radcliffe before the hero eventually went off on his own and started his relationship with Eve.
His backstory has plenty of other exciting moments that help define who Rex is, and despite having an awful childhood, he was still able to tell right from wrong and always tried to do the right thing. It’s possible Prime Video didn’t want to include all of these details, but from what we know, his backstory in the TV show mirrors his comic origins. As a result, Invincible should heavily consider giving the character a chance in the spotlight – just as it did Eve – since he has a fascinating past that would work perfectly as a one-off adventure.
A Rex Splode Invincible Special May Not Happen Any Time Soon
Robert Kirkman Revealed Invincible Doesn’t Have Any Plans For Another Special Currently
Despite how enticing a Rex Splode special sounds after Invincible season 3, it may not happen anytime soon. Given how warm the reception was to 2023’s Invincible: Atom Eve, it only seemed like a matter of time before Prime Video repeated the formula with a new character, but a recent update indicates this won’t be the case. According to Dexerto, Robert Kirkman expressed interest in a Rex Splode special but hinted it isn’t currently on the cards as the team is focusing more on trying to commit to yearly releases, which makes sense given the previous production speed issues.
With Rex unlikely to feature again in the main series, it seems like it’ll be a while before we get a closer look at his backstory.
The overall reception to Invincible season 3 has been overwhelmingly positive, and the timely turnaround likely helped boost its reputation. Unfortunately, for the series to continue this trajectory, it may have to sacrifice its special episode gimmick, despite how well it worked previously. Cecil’s origin story in Invincible season 3 proved that the show doesn’t need dedicated episodes for every character to explore their background, but with Rex unlikely to feature again in the main series, it seems like it’ll be a while before we get a closer look at his backstory.
Will We Ever Get A Rex Splode Invincible Special?
The Franchise’s Popularity Suggests A Rex Splode Special Is Possible In The Future
With Invincible prioritizing new seasons over specials, it creates questions about whether we’ll ever see a one-off Rex Splode project. After his season 3 sacrifice, now feels like the perfect time to explore such a topic, and leaving it too long risks fans losing interest. Luckily, Rex’s universal popularity means that viewers will likely be patient about getting his origin story, and it could still be a nice surprise a few years down the line. Additionally, Invincible is only getting bigger, meaning it will want to maximize opportunities when the story reaches its latter stages.
Every episode of Invincible season 3 is available now on Prime Video.
Therefore, assuming the series can get into a regular habit of dropping new content every year, the time will come when spinoff projects make sense, such as the Rex Splode special. Even if it doesn’t happen until after the show is complete, fans will surely still get excited about more Invincible, making the origin story destined to happen eventually. Consequently, with Kirkman still interested in exploring Rex’s history and a comic about his backstory existing, I’d be confident the special episode will still happen, even if it takes a fair few years.
