Carrie Underwood’s Lackluster Job As A Judge Is Improving (She’s Just As Zany As Katy Perry)

New American Idol season 23 judge Carrie Underwood had a lackluster debut in the post-Oscars episode, but she’s been improving, and she’s proven that she’s just as zany and fun as former judge Katy Perry in the episodes that followed. When Katy departed American Idol after seven seasons of judging alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, season 4 winner and global music superstar Carrie was chosen to take her place. Although Carrie seemed like the perfect choice because of her previous experience with the show, some people worried that she was too boring to be entertaining.
When American Idol season 23 premiered with a post-Oscars special, Carrie proved that she was a sweet and kind judge, who gave constructive criticism to the contestants. However, the worry was that her personality wasn’t as fun as Katy’s, who was always known for her outrageous antics on the show. As the next two American Idol sesaon 23 episodes aired, though, Carrie has shown a whole new silly and funny side to herself that’s really making her shine as a judge.

However, as the first American Idol season 23 episode aired, Carrie blossomed, and a cute and silly side to her emerged. During the show, the judges were scared when the producers played a prank on them and blasted James Brown’s “I Feel Good” over the loudspeakers. Carrie screamed and laughed, which was very reminiscent of something that Katy would do. It was a fun moment for Carrie that was a preview of many more to come.
While being attentive and supportive with a kind way of delivering criticism is important for being an American judge, being able to hold the audience’s attention is actually the most crucial thing because the judges are so featured. Carrie has proven herself to be just as captivating as Katy, which is wonderful.
Carrie Wasn’t Shy About Showcasing Another Part Of Her Personality
Unlike Katy, who’s known for being wild and free, Carrie is more quiet and reserved. However, during American Idol contestant Insite’s audition, she let loose and showcased a whole new side to her personality. Insite sang Korn’s heavy metal song “Freak on a Leash,” to which Carrie sang along. She then sang and danced along to him singing “Bodies” by Drowning Pool, thoroughly enjoying the heavy metal music. Carrie, who’s known for being a country music legend, has always been a big fan of rock music, and she even sings it in her concerts, but this was a whole different level of hard rock.
When Luke jokingly asked Carrie what her mother would say about her loving heavy metal music, Carrie replied that her mother knew, and she used to tell her to stop listening to that music when she was younger. Luke then quipped that they’d been to the “Underworld of Underwood.” In these moments with Insite, Carrie showed viewers a different side of her personality, and it was awesome to see. Carrie was so much fun, and she proved that she has what it takes to not only be a supportive judge, but an entertaining one as well.

Carrie’s Playful Side Came Out During The Game
During American Idol contestant and superfan Pat Johnson’s audition, he and Carrie participated in a game show hosted by Ryan Seacrest called, “It’s Giving Idol.” She answered more questions about the show correctly and won the game versus Pat. This was another fun way to introduce viewers to a new side of Carrie. While everyone knows that she’s a gifted singer with one of the best voices, not many people know how personable she is because she’s always been viewed as shy.

Carrie actually has a very playful personality, and she isn’t afraid to express it. While she often comes off as reserved, in this moment with Pat, she really allowed her personality to shine. Carrie treats the contestants like they’re old friends, which makes them feel comfortable when they could be very intimidated while auditioning in front of three music legends. This is similar to Katy, who also had a knack for calming the contestants at the auditions with her warm personality.
Carrie Clog Danced During The American Idol Auditions
Carrie Wasn’t Shy At All
When American Idol season 23 contestant Carsen Webb taught the judges how to clog dance, Carrie really got into it, and enjoyed herself. She said that she’d never clog danced before, but she’d been around a lot of clogging. When Luke joked that he’d only clogged a toilet, Carrie’s grossed-out reaction was priceless. It was surprising to see Carrie being so funny when she clog danced, but she had a great time, which brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
Carrie has a very comedic side that rivals Luke’s, who’s known for being the silliest judge. Katy and Luke always made the show hilarious, including moments such as their impromptu song about queso, Luke taping Katy’s pants closed when they ripped during Hollywood Week, their moo-off when they challenged each other not to laugh as they behaved like cows, and when Katy fell out of her chair while dressed as Ariel on Disney Night, and Luke pointed and laughed at her.
Because Carrie isn’t known for being zany like Katy, it’s been a pleasant surprise to see this new side of her personality. She’s always elegant and poised when she performs, but being an American Idol judge has allowed her to let her hair down and have fun. Carrie’s clog dancing showed that she has what it takes to entertain viewers during the show in addition to judging the contestants, which is a very important aspect of being an American Idol judge.
Longtime fans of Carrie knew that she had a funny side, as evidenced by her banter at her concerts, her TV event Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special, and her job as host of the CMA Awards, among other things. However, her job as an American Idol judge has brought out a whole new side to her, which will serve her well. She’s been just as personable and funny as Katy, which is not an easy thing to do. Carrie’s debut as a judge might’ve been lackluster, but she’s been shining ever since. Carrie has breathed new life into American Idol, and she’s one of the best judges in the show’s history.
