Did 1923 Season 2 Episode 5 Really Kill THAT Character?

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for 1923 season 2, episode 5.1923 season 2, episode 5 ended with a massive cliffhanger, and it’s not clear if Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Gauna) died or not. Every character in 1923 season 2 has had a story filled with tragedy and grief. From all the terrible things that happened to Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph) to Alexandra’s (Julia Schlaepfer) harrowing journey to Montana, no one ever really catches a break in the Yellowstone spinoff show. Now, it looks like Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) may have another tragedy tacked onto her story as well.
In 1923 season 2, episode 5, Pete Plenty Clouds, Teonna, and Runs His Horse (Michael Spears) were trying to find their way north in the wilds of West Texas. Pete offered to break away from the rest of the group in search of water, believing no one would be looking for a lone rider. Unfortunately, he ran into Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) at a watering hole, and the two gave chase to him. It’s not clear exactly what happened, but the episode ended with gunshots before cutting to black, and Pete may have been killed.
1923 Season 2 Episode 5 May Have Killed Pete Plenty Clouds
Pete May Have Killed Kent Or Renaud, But It’s Just As Likely That He Died In 1923 Season 2, Episode 5
Pete Plenty Clouds probably died at the end of 1923 season 2, episode 5. There’s no way to know for sure right now, but it’s the most likely scenario. Even if Pete did manage to kill either Father Renaud or Marshal Kent before being shot, the other would still be alive and able to shoot him right back. Additionally, it would make more dramatic sense for Pete to die instead of Kent or Renaud. If they died, Teonna would be robbed of a final confrontation with the men who have been terrorizing her, whereas if Pete died, it would be another reason for Teonna to get revenge.

Yellowstone’s 6666 Texas Ranch Puts Teonna Rainwater In Danger In 1923 Season 2
1923’s Teonna Rainwater has ventured to a familiar location in the show’s second season, but it could quickly become an unfriendly site.
There is, however, still a chance that Pete is alive. Taylor Sheridan always seems to have a trick up his sleeve, and he rarely chooses the most obvious possibility in his writing. Additionally, 1923 could still do quite a bit with Pete, as long as he isn’t dead. Pete could capture Father Renaud and bring him back to Teonna, which could be a catalyst for his possible redemption story in 1923. Teonna is also long overdue for some good news and happiness, and since the rest of the characters in 1923 finally caught a break, she may have as well.
Pete Plenty Clouds’ 1923 Death Connects To A Real Life Tragedy
The Original Actor Who Portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds, Cole Brings Plenty, Tragically Passed Away In 2024
Unfortunately, Pete Plenty Clouds’ apparent death in 1923 season 2, episode 5 also brings to mind a real-life tragedy surrounding the character and the show. Pete was recast in 1923 season 2 because the original actor who portrayed him, Cole Brings Plenty, sadly passed away in April 2024. Since 1923 season 2 didn’t begin filming until July 2024, the production needed to put Jeremy Gauna in the role to finish out the end of Pete’s story. While Taylor Sheridan likely wrote Pete’s death in 1923 long before Brings Plenty’s untimely passing, it’s still hard not to draw connections to the real-life tragedy.
