Rick and Morty has been an Adult Swim staple for years, quickly becoming the biggest show on the channel. Despite flirting with the occasional controversy, Rick and Morty has multiple Emmys and constantly brings new ideas to the screen. But for all the great episodes Rick and Morty has offered over the years, it’s certainly had its fair share of less-than-memorable outings.
Based on ratings, it would seem that “Claw And Hoarder: Special Ricktim’s Morty” and “Raising Gazorpazorp”, for instance, are among them. From Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon’s perspective, the latter and “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender” stand out to him as some of the show’s worst episodes. However, the episode that appears to be the subject of the most vitriol is actually “Rise Of The Numbericons: The Movie” from season 7.

The Continuation of Water T’s Story Should’ve Been Flushed
“Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie” is the eighth episode of Rick and Morty‘s seventh season, continuing the story of season 2’s fifth episode “Get Schwifty.” Following Water T’s quest to save the universe, Water T, Morty, and Mr. Goldenfold used math to keep everybody safe. As the only episode of the series to never show, or mention, Rick, it’s not a shock that it’s IMDb’s lowest-rated Rick and Morty episode, where three of the top five are from season 7.

Grabbing the lowest spot by 1.2 stars shows how unfavorable the episode’s reception was. Despite continuing a previously used plot, “Get Schwifty” had the benefit of a perfect song to make the episode memorable. “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” was another episode on the list that continued a previous story, but Rick and Morty’s consistent use of Mr. Poopybutthole at the end of seasons, allowing more time to connect with his story and leading to some of Mr. Poopybuttholes best Rick and Morty’s cameos. Unlike Mr. Poopybutthole, Water T wasn’t as beloved of a character at the time.
Why “Rise Of The Numbericons: The Movie” Was So Poorly Received
It Was Missing The Best Part Of The Original
As mentioned above, “Get Schwifty” used a song to generate a memorable moment for people to talk about. While the story was less about Water T and more about Rick and Morty, Water T still played a role, and the tease for his story at the end set up “Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie” well. Unfortunately, the episode failed to deliver on that promise. Water T felt flat as a character, unable to carry the weight of a main character’s story, while his sidekicks, Morty and Mr. Goldenfold, struggled to fit into his world.
“Rise of Numbericons: The Movie” failed to bring out the best in its characters, forcing the dynamics to feel off. In a show called Rick and Morty, the episode lacked both characters in their usual roles. Morty was relegated to a secondary sidekick, unable to riff with his grandfather. The lack of Rick’s over-complicated explanations for what’s happening was gone, leaving some aspects confusing. After the rest of the season had been about pushing the overarching narrative forward, taking a break for this random side quest felt out of place.

Season 7 Wasn’t One Of The Shows Best
As a whole, season 7 of Rick and Morty fell a little flat, as evidenced by three of its episodes being IMDb’s lowest. The exit of Roiland’s voice and humor affected Rick & Morty, as they were deep into production when his exit occurred. Adding in the style change to the series, there were a lot of major and minor adjustments made during the season.
Rick And Morty Season 7 Is The Show’s Most Divisive Yet (& That’s A Good Thing)
Rick and Morty season 7 has reached its conclusion and while it proved to be the most divisive season yet, this is actually good news for the series.
Whether it was the result of these behind-the-scenes changes or not, Rick and Morty season 7 clearly struggled to find its footing. It finished with a bang via its universally well-recieved finale, but the season as a whole was dragged down by the overwhelmingly negative reception to episodes like “Rise Of The Numbericons: The Movie.” But now that Rick’s mission for vengeance is done, the show can try and get back on the right track in season 8 with an entirely new story.
