Netflix’s Squid Game has the potential to break an unforgivable TV rule that would create a darker story than anything they’ve written so far, and I theorize that’s precisely what they’ll do. When Squid Game season 1 first released on Netflix, there was no way to predict that it would become one of the streaming giant’s most-watched original shows of all time. However, the success led to a second season that released at the end of 2024 and the upcoming final season, which will come out June 27, 2025.

Waiting for the third season of Squid Game feels impossible, even though it’s only three months away. Squid Game season 2 introduced new players who were just as entertaining to watch as the past group. Unlike the first season, which wiped out everyone but Gi-hun, a large group of the players are still alive after the attempted coup, which gives fans plenty of room to speculate about what will happen. I might not know how the story will end, but I believe that Netflix already set up one character’s tragic death, which would break an unforgivable TV rule.

I Think Squid Game Is Going To Kill Kim Jun-Hee Despite The Tragedy

When it comes to TV and movies, there’s an unwritten rule that you don’t kill children or pregnant people. Even the most grisly horror stories tend to follow this rule. However, it feels inevitable that Squid Game season 3 will break the unforgivable rule by killing Kim Jun-hee, which would be utterly tragic. Jun-hee is one of the most likable characters of Squid Game season 2, approaching situations with a degree of realism that’s refreshing.

Even if Jun-hee makes it out of the games, which seems unlikely, she can’t have a saccharine ending without undercutting the rest of the show.

Sadly, death feels like the only appropriate ending for Player 222. As much as I want to root for her, Jun-hee making it to the end of the show alive and happy just doesn’t feel realistic in the world of Squid Game. Gi-hun might have survived Squid Game season 1, but it came at a stark price. Even if Jun-hee makes it out of the games, which seems unlikely, she can’t have a saccharine ending without undercutting the rest of the show.

She’s also the only major character who understands and accepts the fatality and ruthlessness of their situation. Jun-hee accepts that Young-mi would have died no matter what. Unfortunately, this feels like a foreshadowing of her own fate. The only hopeful sign that she should survive is that In-ho shows compassion towards her when he’s in the game.

However, he also spends the whole time acting like Gi-hun’s friend, only to shoot Jung-bae in front of him. It’s impossible to know whether In-ho’s compassion towards Player 222 was real or fake. While some speculate that the Front Man will be redeemed in Squid Game season 3, I don’t buy that theory. Sadly, I feel pretty certain Kim Jun-hee’s story will end in tragedy, even if I don’t want that to be true.

Kim Jun-Hee Will Likely Make It To The Final 3 Of The Games Before Dying

Squid Game Season 2 Foreshadowed The Final 3 Players

If Kim Jun-hee’s fate is to die in Squid Game season 3, fans can at least be assured that she’ll probably make it to the final three of the games because of a narrative pattern. In Squid Game season 1, the show only introduces three players before the game starts – Seong Gi-hun, Cho Sang-woo, and Kang Sae-byeok – and they’re the final three players.

Squid Game season 2 also introduces three new players before the games start. Kim Jun-hee is one of the only three new players shown ahead of time, alongside Lee Myung-gi (Player 333) and Park Gyeong-seok (Player 246).

Jun-hee and Myung-gi are still definitively alive, as Jun-hee stops Myung-gi from joining the rebellion. Meanwhile, Gyeong-seok could still be alive, even though a pink guard shoots him during the riot. Although the gun’s shown going off, the camera cuts to the pink soldier, so it’s unknown where Gyeong-seok got shot or if he’s dead. Additionally, Park Gyu-Young, who plays Kang No-eul in Squid Game, shared a behind-the-scenes photo that seems to confirms that Gyeong-seok is alive (via Kbizoom). However, she quickly deleted the Instagram post.

Since all three characters are presumably alive, Squid Game season 3 may follow the same trend as the first, keeping Kim Jun-hee alive until close to the end. This could come even sooner than expected, though, if Squid Game season 3 includes the game human chess. That being said, I doubt Squid Game will end the games in exactly the same way since Gi-hun is still alive and fighting. The final 3 might not happen in the same way.

Another writer for Screen Rant predicted that Kim Jun-hee would be the only survivor of Squid Game season 3 because “not even Squid Game would kill off a pregnant woman.” I greatly respect my co-worker, but I think killing Jun-hee is exactly what Squid Game would do. Squid Game season 1 became wildly popular in 2021, and the brutality of the Netflix K-drama is one of the biggest reasons why. The themes of financial woes, societal inequality, and poverty resonated with audiences.

Squid Game season 3 could go many directions, but these six narrative choices could ruin the Netflix entire show.

Squid Game season 2 increased the sinisterness of the deadly games, including a crueler recruitment game and younger players. The characters included prove the game runners are willing to prey on people impacted by cancer, trans people, victims of scams, and unhoused individuals. Very few groups are immune to their exploitation because they prey on all the most vulnerable members of society.

However, the decision to kill Kim Jun-hee would raise the level of viciousness again. They’ve already proven they’re willing to kill a pregnant person who wants to raise her baby by including her in the games, but to actually take the action would be a step-up that feels appropriate for Squid Game season 3.

Squid Game Might Be Willing To Break The Unforgivable Rule

If a Hollywood screenwriter created Squid Game, I’d assume Kim Jun-hee would survive the games. The US film and TV industry has a tendency to give characters plot armor and happy endings, even if it doesn’t fit with the story. A prime example of this is The War of the Worlds, which is a gritty, tragic tale with an undeserved happy ending. However, Squid Game is a K-drama that has an entirely different set of expectations.

Korean media frequently features bittersweet, sad, or downright tragic endings. I’ve watched far more K-dramas without happily ever afters than Hollywood productions, and I’ve also seen many shocking character deaths in Korean shows that would never work in US TV shows. For these reasons, I think the Squid Game creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, might be willing to break the unforgivable rule. After all, he hasn’t catered the past two seasons of Squid Game to American audiences. There’s no reason to think he would start to do so now.
