Wait, Shouldn’t Jeff Know About Shauna’s New Yellowjackets Season 3 Secret Based On A Major Season 1 Reveal?
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 7, “Croak.”
A Yellowjackets season 1 reveal means that Jeff (Warren Kole) should know about the secret Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) is hiding from him in season 3. Shauna’s latest secret relates to the new characters introduced in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 6’s ending. One of the new characters, a scientist named Edwin (Nelson Franklin), has already been killed in Yellowjackets‘ 1990s timeline after Lottie (Courtney Eaton) lodged an axe into the back of his head. The fates of the other scientist, Hannah (Ashley Sutton), and the wilderness guide Kodiak (Joel McHale) have not been shown yet, but both are poised to die.
In the present day, Shauna’s daughter, Callie (Sarah Desjardins), begins putting the pieces together and doing some investigative work, which has led her to the discovery that two scientists and their guide went missing less than 100 miles in the wilderness from where the Yellowjackets’ plane was found. Callie believes her mother may have been involved in killing Edwin, Hannah, and Kodiak. When Callie shares her suspicion with Jeff, he seems to know nothing about this secret, even though he should already know the truth.
Yellowjackets Season 1 Confirmed That Jeff Read Shauna’s Journals, So He Should Know About The Scientists
The Journals Were The Key To Jeff’s Blackmail In Season 1
One of season 1’s biggest reveals was that Jeff was the one blackmailing the Yellowjackets. Jeff admitted to Shauna that he had read all of her journals from her time in the wilderness and that is how he knew to use Yellowjackets‘ mysterious symbol as part of the blackmail. Season 3 has shown that teenage Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) is still writing in her journals and is still recording details about her time in the wilderness that Jeff will go on to read years later.

If Shauna wrote about Edwin, Hannah, and Kodiak in her journals, though, then Jeff should know about them. However, the information that Callie presents seems to be brand new to him. While Jeff definitely doesn’t know everything that happened in the wilderness, he knows about the symbol, and he knows about Shauna losing her baby. With the scientists and their guide being the first people from civilization that the survivors encountered, it would be strange for Shauna to not write about this in her journals, and for Jeff to not know this while simultaneously knowing so much else.

Edwin’s Death Marks A Pivotal Turning Point For The Yellowjackets
The deaths of Coach Ben and Edwin seem to be a turning point for the Yellowjackets, as the killing and cannibalism are no longer just about survival, but about power. Part of this turning point involves Shauna being crowned as the group’s leader. As she becomes consumed with exerting her dangerous power over others, she may stop journaling and lose the part of herself that is reflective. From a practical standpoint, this would explain not writing about the scientists, and Jeff not reading about them in the future.
The scientists are studying frogs, who are the source of the mysterious screeching noise in the wilderness.
Another possibility is that Shauna does continue to journal, yet she chooses not to write about Edwin, Hannah, and Kodiak because their deaths are too horrifying to put into words. She seemed shocked, but delighted when Lottie killed Edwin. Shauna may have a more direct role in killing Hannah and Kodiak, and based on her current trajectory, she will enjoy killing them. These are not the kinds of things that someone wants to write about themselves, even if it is true, which is why Jeff may not know Shauna’s latest Yellowjackets secret.
