Green Lantern Officially Has a New Strongest Villain

Warning! Preview pages ahead for Green Lantern #21!Things are going from bad to worse for Green Lantern as he faces a powerful new foe. With the Emotional Spectrum frayed, Hal Jordan and his allies are doing what they can to protect the DCU from the fallout. But a sinister villain has emerged to take advantage of the chaos and that spells trouble for the Emerald Knight.

In a preview for Green Lantern #21 by Jeremy Adams and Jack Herbert, Kyle Rayner, Superboy, and Odyssey are attacked by Starbreaker and Sorrow, the Sadness Lantern. They’ve come to collect the Source artifact the trio has sought out so that Starbreaker and Sorrow can continue building a new Central Power Battery.

Despite the advantage Superboy initially gives, Starbreaker grows in size and restrains Green Lantern and Superboy in Starbreaker’s oversized hands. He begins to crush them to death, but fortunately for the two heroes, Hal Jordan arrives on the scene with a construct army to save his pals.

Thanks to the Green Lantern Corps’ previous leader, the Emotional Spectrum has been fractured. Many of the Central Power Batteries were destroyed, making the lights other than green completely unstable. Now anyone who experiences extreme versions of rage or fear can actually manifest Lantern powers for themselves. But while Hal and the rest of the Corps work to fix this problem, Starbreaker has emerged to use the chaos to his advantage. He’s partnered with Sorrow to build a brand-new Central Power Battery to create a ‘Starbreaker Corps’, giving him power that could rival the entire Green Lantern Corps.

As Green Lantern fans know, Starbreaker isn’t new, as he’s had a number of encounters with the Corps before. Starbreaker is a Sun-Eater and, as such, is an extremely powerful cosmic entity, able to absorb solar energy and use it endow himself with a bevy of powers (including the size alteration he’s just surprised Green Lantern and Superboy with). But while Starbreaker is already strong, he’s not content with the powers he has. Starbreaker is going to do whatever he needs to gain more power, including creating his own Central Power Battery, which could put the entire DCU at risk.

The DC Universe is already in a fragile state with the Emotional Spectrum’s damage. It’s bad enough that people can generate Lantern powers without Starbreaker trying to further damage the Spectrum by creating a new Central Power Battery. If he succeeds, he’ll give himself a direct line to some of the most powerful energies in the DCU (not to mention cause irreversible damage to the Emotional Spectrum). If the Green Lanterns don’t succeed in stopping Starbreaker, things are going to get much worse for everyone in the DCU.

Green Lantern #21 is available now from DC Comics.
