Modder Speaks Out After Recreation Of GTA 6 In GTA 5 Is Removed

A GTA modder has spoken out after a video showcasing their recreation of Grand Theft Auto 6 in Grand Theft Auto 5 was removed from YouTube. At this point, it’s no secret that players will do just about anything to get their hands on GTA 6. Release date theories abound, and new trailer rumors circulate once every two weeks. Rockstar itself has even admitted that it stokes the flames of speculation, allowing rampant fan theorization to drive a natural hype cycle that reaches a fever pitch whenever it breathes a word about GTA 6.
So one modder, who goes by Dark Space on YouTube, decided to take matters into their own hands: they created a custom map of a modern Vice City as they believe it’ll look in GTA 6, entirely within GTA 5. The video, entitled “I Finally Made A Playable GTA 6 Map In FiveM and Single Player,” featured a tour of the modded map, showing off some Vice City landmarks. But in another video, posted on March 23, Dark Space revealed that Take-Two Interactive had issued a removal request, and that the video had been removed from the platform.
This Fanmade GTA 6 Map Apparently Attracted Ire From Rockstar
Why Dark Space Thinks The Map Was Taken Down
In the seven-minute video describing the video’s removal, Dark Space admitted that they saw the takedown request coming. They had a feeling Take-Two would take issue with their imitating details from alleged GTA 6 leaks to create a version of unreleased content. Even if the modded map didn’t feature any leaked content, they admitted that they knew they were playing with fire.
After the video was taken down, Dark Space also scrubbed download links from the platform to prevent additional copyright strikes, even though Take-Two did not request their removal.
Still, Dark Space insists they did nothing wrong. Speaking of Take-Two, they said, “In their corpo heads, it leads to a loss in sales, but in reality, my map does not negatively affect their sales. It was building hype around the game and giving players something to enjoy while we waited for the next trailer.” They also expressed a belief that GTA‘s developer and publisher have been far too harsh with its modding crackdowns in the past, having previously removed a variety of mods for Grand Theft Auto‘s The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundle
GTA Fans Are Still Desperate For Anything Resembling GTA 6
A GTA 6 Map Project Comes As No Surprise
It was really only a matter of time before someone attempted to recreate what little we know of GTA 6 in GTA 5. Fan-made projects to map its version of Vice City are already underway (in fact, one of them was the direct inspiration for Dark Space’s map). And efforts like the Liberty City Preservation Project have attempted to do the same thing in reverse, bringing GTA 4‘s map into GTA 5 – even if it was also subject to a takedown request, this time from Rockstar.

After Seeing This Minor Steam Update, I’m Convinced GTA 6 Just Lost GOTY 2025
With a hugely-anticipated indie game possibly getting a 2025 release, GTA 6 might have received some serious competition for the GOTY title.
And with the way fans have been anticipating GTA 6, flying off the handle at any semblance of news, it’s no surprise that someone tried to make a playable version a bit early. What is surprising is how quickly Take-Two struck with its removal request. It seems like exactly the kind of organic excitement Rockstar wants to encourage. And frankly, short of its rumored $100 price point, I can’t imagine anything would meaningfully cut into GTA 6‘s sales. No one would choose an empty, incomplete, fan-made Vice City over a brand-new handcrafted Rockstar game.
Whatever the case, though, it appears work on this “GTA 6 in GTA 5 mod” has stopped, and is unlikely to resume anytime soon. Players will have to wait until the real Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out to explore its version of Vice City, but without a release date and with the ever-present threat of a delay, we have no idea how long that’ll be.
