Jared Keeso’s beloved Canadian comedy series Shoresy continued an extremely rare streak for modern television with the finale of its fourth season. The most recent six-episode season of the rapid-fire comedy spinoff of Keeso’s award-winning show Letterkenny represented a vast departure from previous seasons, as it took place in the summer in “Sudvegas”, as the real Northern Ontario city of Sudbury is colloquially known. With most of the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs gone home for the summer, Shoresy and his closest teammates played out non-hockey-centric character arcs while celebrating their national championship win around Sudbury with the NOSHO Cup.
While there was no on-ice action in the most recent season, the episodes saw its central characters undergo some personal growth, particularly Shoresy himself. By the ending of season 4 of Shoresy, the rude but genuine former hockey captain discovered just how perfect he would be as a coach, and committed himself to that as the next step after his on-ice career was forced to end. Hitch, Dolo, Goody, and Nat all found their own satisfying conclusions by the time the summer ended, and as a result, season 4 of Shoresy continued a most impressive streak for Jared Keeso.

Each Finale Is Well-Acted, Well-Written, And Emotional
Through four seasons, each season finale of Shoresy has been a total home run, which is incredibly rare in modern television. Across just six half-hour episodes per season, Keeso and his team manage to build towards an emotionally satisfying, upbeat ending that leaves viewers content until the next entry in the series arrives. While the entire show is excellent when it comes to balancing humor, hockey, and heart, Shoresy‘s season finales always seem to bring out the very best writing and acting from the creators and cast of characters.

Season 4 of Shoresy is one of the best examples of that consistent excellence. While season 4 acts as the first entry in “Part II of Shoresy“, it really acts as a transitional period for the title character. He spends the entire season conflicted over what to do with the rest of his life now that he can no longer play hockey, all the while inadvertently proving to himself that the answer is obvious: coaching. It’s a necessary character development for him, and season 4’s finale nails it, especially with his final speech to the Lakers.
Shoresy Season 4’s Final 2 Episodes Are Among The Show’s Best Outings
Despite A Smaller Cast, The Entire End Of Season 4 Was Excellent
What little online detraction there has been for season 4 of Shoresy has been directly related to the season’s lack of hockey, and the resulting lack of perceived stakes. That’s a misguided view of season 4, as it was very different from its predecessors by design; Shoresy‘s seasons don’t all feel the same, and as a result the entire show doesn’t feel stale. The final two episodes in particular were among the show’s strongest, despite virtually nothing hockey-related. They highlight the heart of Shoresy, and the strength of the overall character writing.
All four of the Blueberry Buddies Laker player actors have played some level of advanced hockey, just as many of the Blueberry Bulldogs actors themselves have.
Episode 5 has two great moments in the reconciliation between the Jims and Dolo, Hitch, and Goody and Shoresy’s one-on-one conversation with Nat, but it largely focuses on Shoresy and the other Blueberry Bulldogs’ relationship with their Blueberry Buddies, the young local hockey stars, the Lakers. The Bulldogs show the Lakers what it takes to be the best, albeit in the personal sense, as they coach Jack through singing karaoke to capture the affection of a girl that’s out of his league. It’s a fun, mostly silly episode, but it’s guaranteed to make a viewer feel good.
Episode 6 shows the growth of not only Shoresy, but his teammates as well. Despite finally making it into the party known as Weird Sudbury, Dolo, Hitch, and Goody forgo the party they’ve been looking forward to all summer so that they can attend the Blueberry Festival Dance in support of their Blueberry Buddies. On top of that, Shoresy finally manages to close Laura Mohr, ending a series-long story and introducing a new side to Shoresy: a legitimate boyfriend. It’s some of the strongest writing that Keeso and his team have ever done.
Shoresy Season 5 Has A Big Challenge To Continue The Show’s Impressive Finale Streak
Season 5 Will See Major Changes To The Overarching Narrative
It remains to be seen if Shoresy can go five-for-five on near-perfect season finales, and season 5 may prove to be the most difficult to wrap things up on a positive note. Now that he’s agreed to coach the Bulldogs, Shoresy may wind up replacing Sanguinet as the true leader of the team, even if they are co-coaches. Conflict seems inevitable there, with more coming as Shoresy’s relationship with his fellow players changes. If he has to suddenly be a true authority figure instead of a teammate, then Shoresy season 5 could be rife with tension.
