Chapter #108 of the Spy x Family manga is by far one of the most unique entries in the series. One of the reasons why fans find this story so interesting is because Melinda, wife of the series’ main villain, revealed her predilection for the art of Tarot readings. The manga went as far as to have the woman attempt to predict the future of the relationship between Anya and Damian.

Nonetheless, her inexperience and nervousness caused her to fail the reading, leaving the Forger family, as well as the readers, disappointed with the lack of answers that came from the chapter. The reading, lamentably, does not take place, as Melinda has no idea what the cards mean. Soon after that, the memory of her husband causes her to panic, being the first hint ever given about the theory of Donovan reading minds being correct.

Yet, by looking at the cards drawn by the woman, someone with knowledge of tarot could still infer what Anya and Damian’s compatibility is like. The first two cards, Death and the 10 of Pentacles, reveal that both parties are open to a friendship, as it would help them both achieve their goals and find stability in their lives. The first card, which relates to Anya’s wants, also hints at her wanting a new beginning, likely referring to her desire for Damian to forget their hilarious but tragic first meeting.

One of the oddest details about chapter #108 of Spy x Family is the fact that the spread laid out by Melinda fits perfectly the current relationship between Anya and Damian. The fans are aware that both children do wish to become closer, despite how reluctant they are to admit it. Anya desperately wants to give her father tools for Operation Strix to succeed and knows befriending Damian is the easiest way for her to contribute. Donovan’s son, who is helplessly in love with the girl, wants nothing more than to be her friend, although his ego prevents him from being honest.

If their friendship is going to work, both children would have to work on their flaws and come to an understanding, as implied by the cards. The Tarot reading also referenced the dark secrets and traumas both kids try to keep hidden from the world. Damian does not want others to know how lonely he is and how terrified his father makes him. Anya is still struggling with her tragic backstory, and her ability to read others’ minds is also a constant cause of anxiety for her. Melinda, although a novice, was completely right in her reading.

Ever since the Spy x Family manga began publication, it has become apparent to readers that Endo was a master of hiding small but significant details in his story. From letters containing secrets about Henderson’s family to the origins of Anya’s name, the author seldom includes something in the manga if it does not play a part in the story. Melinda’s Tarot spread is another amazing example of this trend. While it might not have been significant for the chapter, as the woman barely talked about the cards, analyzing them can help fans understand Anya and Damian’s future.

It might take time, but the protagonist of Spy x Family will not give up on her mission to befriend the Desmond family’s youngest child. While her struggles continue, fans can be sure that their favorite series will continue bringing them hilarious adventures and wholesome moments that they will never forget.
