The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 3 sees Jesse make a drastic choice, one that makes his darkest moment from season 3 even worse. Jesse Gemstone has made a lot of bad choices throughout the four seasons of the HBO show, with the entire story stemming from a sex scandal in The Righteous Gemstones season 1. However, Jesse may have just made his darkest choice yet, serious escalating things in The Righteous Gemstones season 3.
Although the Gemstone family still bickers, Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin have definitely grown as people since the events of The Righteous Gemstones season 1. At the end of The Righteous Gemstones season 3, Eli acknowledged, this, putting Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin in charge of the church in the wake of his retirement. Season 4 has seen the trio successfuly attempt to run Gemstone Ministries, but the rivalry with the Simkins has seemingly brought Jesse back to his old ways.

The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 3 ends on a massive cliffhanger, with Jesse’s friends burning down Vance Simkins’ new church. In the episode, Jesse’s friends, now known as his leadership team, inform Jesse that Vance Simkins has opened a new church across from a Gemstone campus. Although Jesse tells Gideon that he is handling it responsibly, the leadership team is later seen burining the church down, presumably under Jesse’s instruction.

Although the Gemstones ended up winning Dusty over in season 3, Jesse’s season 4 decision proves that tensions are still rising between the two families.

Vance Simkins is Jesse’s main rival in The Righteous Gemstones season 4, with him being the family’s biggest threat. Jesse has to prove that he is capable of running Gemstone Ministries, and since Vance is their biggest competitor, it makes sense that Jesse is scared of him. Vance is even aware of their rivalry, with the duo clashing egos at a meeting of the Cape and Pistol Society.
