The shocking ending of Severance season 2 saw innie Mark (Adam Scott) rescue Gemma (Dichen Lachman) from Lumon’s testing floor, only to decide to stay in the building with Helly (Britt Lower). The innie remains unconvinced that outie Mark’s reintegration will still allow him to exist, influencing his choice to stay. The episode also laid the groundwork for an innie revolution against the cult-like corporation.
Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Erickson discussed the complications surrounding Severance giving both outies and innies happy endings. He explained how both sides have an equal amount of life, and while reintegration is a possibility, there’s no telling how much of one version of a person will be dominant. However, the series creator teases hope that both parties can find an amicable way to achieve a positive resolution for everyone. Check out what Erickson had to say below:
It’s hard and it’s complicated because with the innie and outie dynamic, it’s sort of a zero-sum game, where however much life one of them has, that means the other has less. Reintegration has been raised as a possibility. But there’s also the question of to what degree does that decimate the identity of each? Who would this new person be and how much would they resemble the innie or the outie? I’m an optimist. I do think that there’s room for a happy ending, but it sure is complicated.

As season 2 has progressed, the innie characters of Severance have grown even more independent of their outies. This is reflected in Mark and Helly’s romantic relationship, as well as Dylan (Zach Cherry) being given autonomy by his outie regarding whether he really wants to leave Lumon. This all culminates in an uprising, with Dylan leading the marching band innies against Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) as his co-workers run for refuge after Gemma got out. This makes the rift between innies and outies greater than it’s ever been.

However, based on Erickson’s comment, it seems he’s still hopeful for a solution between outies and innies that allows them both to be happy. For now, Severance‘s current conflict indicates only one person can win, a mentality that kept innie Mark from leaving, not knowing what his future fate would be.
