Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Netflix’s light-hearted mystery series The Residence brought plenty of intrigue to the White House in season 1, but will the show score a season 2 renewal soon? Created for the small screen by Paul William Davies, The Residence follows Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), a private consultant for the DC Metro Police Department who is brought in to solve a murder that took place during the State Dinner in the White House. Featuring a massive ensemble cast, The Residence tells a classic whoddunit story with a modern screwball comedy sensibility.

Arriving in the early months of 2025, The Residence scored decent marks from critics, including a Rotten Tomatoes score in the 80s. Particular praise was given to Aduba’s performance as Cordelia Cupp, and she’s taken her place among the pantheon of eccentric sleuths on the large and small screen. Though season 1 did an excellent job of wrapping up its self-contained mystery storyline, detectives like Cupp are always finding themselves in the middle of one puzzle after another, which bodes well for the show’s future. While Netflix hasn’t renewed The Residence yet, it could easily return for season 2.

Just days after the first season dropped all 8 episodes, the latest news arrives in the form of a season 2 tease from the creator of The Residence. Paul William Davies helped bring the series to streaming, and now the creator has mentioned that he’s already cooking up new ideas for a sophomore season. Though it isn’t clear if The Residence was designed to be a miniseries, Williams seems to hint that the open-ended premise could always continue. I’ve got ideas, so I hope people respond to her and [to the show], and then we can do it,” said Davies, hanging his hopes on fan response to the murder mystery.

While the White House setting is somewhat limiting, shows like Only Murders in the Building have proven that a well-told story can push a mystery past the implausible nature of its premise.

As Davies mentioned, The Residence is really about Cordelia Cupp, and the quirky detective could return again and again like other fictional gumshoes such as Hercule Poirot or Benoit Blanc. While the White House setting is somewhat limiting, shows like Only Murders in the Building have proven that a well-told story can push a mystery past the implausible nature of its premise.

Read Davies’ full comments below:

I really do hope that I have the opportunity to tell more stories with it, and I think it would start with Cordelia. She’s Cordelia Cupp, she’s the sun around which everything else revolves. So whether it’s more in the White House or somewhere else, I really do think there’s more story to tell with her. I’ve got ideas, so I hope people respond to her and [to the show], and then we can do it.

Netflix Hasn’t Renewed The Show Yet

Though The Residence clearly has potential as an ongoing story, it isn’t clear if Netflix envisions it as a miniseries. The streamer has launched plenty of programs that start as miniseries but become something more, and The Residence is perfect fodder to become an anthology. However, it will all come down to viewership numbers to help determine if the series is worth continuing. Often, a miniseries gets such huge ratings that its platform or network can’t help but dream up more seasons to meet the demand.

All 8 episodes of The Residence premiered on March 20, 2025.

Uzo Aduba Stole The Show As Cordelia Cupp

With the ending of The Residence tightly wrapping up the season 1 murder mystery, there is only one cast member who is likely to return in season 2. Since it’s her show, Uzo Aduba will undoubtedly return as intrepid detective Cordelia Cupp, and her quirky sleuthing skills could be challenged by another high-profile case. While some of season 1’s supporting cast could come back, it would make more sense for each season to introduce a new ensemble of major stars. Season 1 had A-listers like Randall Park and Giancarlo Esposito, and season 2 could continue that trend.
